IRS Offer In Compromise

The word compromise and IRS don't often go together, but when they do, you have an IRS offer in compromise. This is a tool available to the taxpayer who has pretty much depleted every other option, except perhaps declaring bankruptcy. It is an option that not may people consider, and it is one that the IRS is not likely to tell you about.

I'm interested. How does it work?
An IRS offer in compromise works like this. If you or your business owes money to the IRS, either in the form of back taxes or penalties, you are required to pay that amount back within a given time frame. It is not always easy to come up with the money to pay back that money, particularly if you were assessed unusually large tax penalties or assessments.

When that person or individual has exhausted all possible methods of repayment and may or may not be on the verge of bankruptcy, one way out of the dilemma is to file for an offer of compromise. This means that you would, essentially, be offering to pay back a lower amount than is actually owed, but with the promise of paying the agreed upon amount immediately.

This option can save an individual or business from going into bankruptcy, which would result in no money (or very little) going to the IRS. This is why they are willing to negotiate some form of payment, but only if the conditions are right. Mainly, the individual or business must be able to prove they have no other means by which to pay the bill.

How can I get one?
If you decide to go this route, you will need to slog through some paperwork. Since this is a very serious matter, one that can save you or your business a lot of money, you need to treat it with the respect it deserves. Seeking the advice of experienced professionals is one way to ensure the best chance for a great solution.
