Re-Opening A Closed IRS Audit

It's a little known program, but it is quite real. Re-opening a closed audit is in fact possible, despite the fact that there are several rules in place which say that a closed audit means just that - case closed.

Still, it is important to remember that there is usually always a recourse in the event of an unfair situation. There is a program which allows audits to be reopened in situations where a fair deal was not reached the first time around.

As an example case, if during the original audit the taxpayer did not receive the audit letter or failed to understand what was happening, and thus did not provide the IRS with the details requested, the audit will usually be reconsidered.

Audit Reconsideration is possible in many situations, so requesting to be qualified for this program is frequently a good option. This is particularly valuable, as in most tax cases, it can take a period of years before a taxpayer gets the final bill for what they owe the IRS from an older audit. The audit reconsideration is still effective as a tool, even after the time limits to appeal have expired.

In cases where the IRS agrees to audit reconsideration, the taxpayer's case is assigned to an auditor to reopen the taxpayer's audit. Then, and only then is it possible for the original audit to be changed.
